to the National Summit on the Intersection of Domestic Violence
and Child Maltreatment
Tuesday, June 2, 2009
As a judge at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia I saw first hand the suffering and long-term trauma experienced by children exposed to violence.
-Why are mothers who are the victims of domestic violence losing custody of their children to the courts and to the child protection system?
-Why are children of color over-represented in the child protection system?
-Do children need a relationship with their fathers even when their fathers have been abusive to them and their mothers in the past? If so, what does that relationship look like?
I ask that you explore all of these things while always remembering that the needs of children who are exposed to violence are inextricably linked to the needs of mothers who are the victims of domestic violence.

mothers who are being unfairly treated in the courts of Goochland County , Virginia need to speak up and unite to remove J&D Judge Berry
who rarely if ever rules in favor of the mother or true needs of the child, abuse is ignored , cases are continued and continued and continued
Parents spend a fortune in real costs, missed days from work, attorney fees, testing fees, psychological testing by the judge selected psychologist everyone wins except the child and mothers who are denied rights such as having an attorney present, allowed to present evidence the judge does not wish to hear while fathers are given lengthy time to testify and pergury is RAMPANT. The pain and suffering to our children is not recognised while the relation between divorced parents is paramount and the mother always at fault. Come on Mom's state your case here get organized and get this judge removed as well as the
county social service workers who are the worst with very little concern for children. This is one very messed up county in general but what is occuring in that court is surely illegal and harming our children and families chance to heal and get on with life!!!
